In my opinion I feel as though we do need Affirmative Action because it is important that all races feel equal with is a big pro. I also like the boost it gives to disadvantaged students which I agree with the Article on that one. But there are also Cons for this subject which I disagree with like it reinforces stereotypes and racism, but I do agree with it.

I agree with Casey we cant have people in a FREE COUNTRY worrying if there gonna get yelled at for being african american, asian, jewish, or even muslim. Or even Colby's example where two people were applying for the same job its not fair for the white male to get it just because the black man is "different"

I agree with Dominick because as we all know our United nation is give equal rights and freedoms. Without affirmative action things that happened before (such as slavery) and people scared to go outside and judged by their race without consequences could still occur. For example, schools were differed by color. All people deserve to have their own rights no matter color, nationality, and religion.

We need affirmative Action today because it helps stop racist injustice and hate crimes meaning that if a white person and a black person apply for the same job and the black person has more experience in that job and the white guy doesn't have good experience, if the person interviewing them is raciest then he will probably choose the white guy,i think that's why we need affirmative action.

I think we do need Affirmative Action today because it helps stop racism, hate crimes, and it helps disadvantaged people. All of these things were and still are problems today and Affirmative Action certainly helps prevent bad things like hate crimes. In my opinion, the most important part is that it helps minorities get an education. If minorities weren't offered a better education, this countries future wouldn't be as bright.

I agree with Matthew. I feel that Affirmative Action should be something we should all talk about, something that maybe will finally help us limit racism, or maybe not have it at all. As Matthew said it can help with education towards minorities no matter who you are and in my opinion I think that is a really big thing. Affirmative Action in my opinion looks like it can low down racism and help the minorities in the best way possible.

I agree with Matthew, Affirmative Action helps stop racism and stereotypes targeted to one race. It helps disadvantaged students get a boost. Affirmative Action is a great thing to stop racism today. minorities might get a chance to not get underestimated by the color of their skin or what nationality they are, and that's always a good thing.

I agree with both Skye and Matthew. We do definitely need this many reasons. One reason is how it creates diversity in colleges and schools. With that, other people can learn about each others background and their culture. Having diversity in schools and colleges should allow students with equal rights and fairness with not only school work, but extra curricular activities, like sports and clubs. And like Skye said, Affirmative Action can decrease the amount of racism that goes on in schools and have people, both ethnic women and men, focus on their education and not have one race overpowering another.

I agree with Cadence. I believe that, unfortunately, even in today's society, many minorities are still discriminaed against to a point where even children as young as 5 years old are affected by racism. Historically, in the past, minorities weren't even given the oppurtunity to recieve an education. Now, they need time to catch up, and they deserve it. The amounts of whites versus minorities at collages can sometimes be a whopping 85-15 ratio. I believe that many whites may think that getting extra points is completely not fair, however they don't understand the ways minorities may suffer, or how their families have suffered as a result of discrimination. Affirmative action allows for diversity in schools, which is helping to make the world a better place. This is because students who may come from communities where everyone is a similar race will get to experience firsthand, on their own, what it's like in the real world, with a whole melting pot of races. I think that affirmative action is a good plan for now, and I believe that eventually, numbers of mixed races in schools and colleges will even out, and one day affirmative action won't even be needed.

I would also like to add an alalogy that may open the eyes of some on the opposing side. Take kids at school who recieve free lunches. Some might say, "Well that's not fair, they get lunch for free while I have to PAY for my lunch?? Wow." That, right there, is such a horrible thing to say. Students who are given free lunch at school get it because their families don't have enough money to pay for school lunch. It's not your fault. It's not their fault. So you have one choice. Join the side thats saying, "this is unfair" - and you let the poor child starve to death. Justify that.
Gigi (Again again)

Sorry but I thought of another analogy. Affirmative action acts like a band-aid. For all the cuts and scrapes of injustice done upon minorities, affirmative action tries to make them better. We don't need band-aids forever, but they certainly help make things better.

I believe that affirmative action is not needed and should be removed. As far as I can tell this just creates more problems. One problem is that minorities get more college credits than white/caucasian people and minorities have more of an advantage to get into a colleges than caucasian people do. That is extremely unfair, which is ironic because America is known for equality and whites aren't getting equal opportunities. Now colleges need to have more minorities because then that college could get sued or fined just for having more whites than minorities. As it states in the article "Students with ethnic minority backgrounds need a helping hand to enjoy privileges that are generally ignored by other races." I think this should only apply if that the person is smart and well educated and has a good background. Minorities shouldn't just be chosen just because there skin color is different. People should be picked for jobs or colleges if they are smart and have a good background. Democracy isn't helping this situation, because as far as I can tell there will always be an imbalance in equality and also in gender. I personally am in favor of the idea of communism. With communism equality is forced and monitored. Only smart people get into colleges no matter what their skin color is. A college may have 99% whites and 1% minorities and that's fine. This is how the Soviets became the one of the smartest educated population in it's time. The Soviets were able to make advancements in space and nuclear warfare faster than America. Now you may think what about the poor or uneducated people can't get a proper education because of this, but the government gives people jobs who aren't very smart. The money is always enough to support the family(Healthcare, education, and some other services are already paid by the government.) Communism balances out the smart and uneducated in their jobs, but everything is fair not because of their race, but because they always get the opportunity given to them. America should just forget about the past and move on to this ideal. Communism obviously has more ideas that give equality because they are always given the opportunity no matter what race the person is. The Soviet Union was a perfect example. If I stated this unclearly about what communism is here is a general idea. Everyone gets the same education. In the end only the smartest get good jobs however race doesn't affect this decision. The people who aren't that smart still get a job that almost gets the same pay as the people who work the good jobs its just that the jobs are a little tedious for the uneducated, but the money is enough to support the family. All in all I believe that affirmative action should be removed and replaced by communism.

I agree with Vlad about the unfairness of the ways that stem from Affirmative Action as its basically racism in reverse. I also agree skin color should have no effect on being accepted or denied into college or work into the first place, but more so on skill and attitude. I disagree with Vlad on repealing it as its original beliefs aren't necessary bad as it simply means giving equal opportunity and open-mindedness to minorities although the message has been carried out the wrong way by straight up favoring minorities this time around unlike the past, which favored Caucasians. You many argue intentions have no effect as its actions, but Affirmative Action adds extra emphasis on Title VII, that basically is the basis of preventing racial discrimination in the workplace. So instead of repealing it, we should just rid of the ways that stem from it and implement new ones.

I agree with Cadence. Affirmative action is needed right now. It promotes diversity, by spreading different cultures and/or traditions among other students. It also helps disadvantage students. By students maybe coming from other parts of the country where multiple opportunities may not be available, to know having some what of an advantage for the best. "It seems that the programs coming with the policy have been successful." Exactly, so why would we change something that is succeeding. If we were to change it be have the possibility of making matters worse and ruining something that was good. I think affirmative action is needed right now.

I disagree with Ella. Affirmative action does promote diversity, but that may not be a good thing for us. We could have a very diverse culture and have many different minority races in our workforce and in our colleges, but how well can the minorities do their jobs. We could have a very diverse set of doctors or NASA workers, but how well could they do their job or how well could the doctors perform. We need to have smart people doing these important tasks. Colleges shouldn't have to worry about their race, they should worry about how well the student performs and his/her background. Imagine that we have a set of doctors, but the students accepted were only accepted because of their race and they may not be able to their job well, whereas their could be a perfectly good smart white kids and they can't get the education to become the doctors because no one will accept them. The Soviets only accepted smart people to their space programs and look what happened. They CRUSHED America in the space race during the Cold War. They got the first man/woman in space, the first animal in space, the first person to orbit the earth, the first person to orbit the moon only to name a few accomplishments. We need to forget about the race of people and even the gender and focus on the smart people of America because their is a good chance they are getting neglected from the workforce. "White people who are more qualified and are working harder can be passed over strictly because of their color." We need to look at this on the flip side because Affirmative action isn't helping us in any way in fact it's hurting America. This country could collapse very easily if Affirmative action is still happening. Democracy isn't helping us in any way. Communism would give people an equal balance of smart and not smart and also a good balance of equality. The Soviets never kicked anyone out just because they were black they happily accepted anyone especially in World War 2. America didn't properly accept black people into the army until half way into the war. THAT'S RIDICULOUS. We need a different form of Affirmative Action because this version isn't helping. Things need to change...

I disagree with Vladimir because yeah you might think that just cause they get extra points they are unintellegent but thats why there are test scores that define if they are smart or not. Also racism is still going on alot of colleges would choose a white person over any other race just because they are white. What if the african american was really smart and had position to go to that college other then the rich white boy that only goes cause his parents make him go. That would be the same thing that your saying he can be getting into a college spot that he does not even deserve other than the african american that really wanted it buh didnt have the money like the white boy did. like it says in the article some stereotypes on colors may never change theyll always choose the white person over anyone so the extra points gives the other racwe a fair shot. 1/26/2017 12:59:49 pm
I disagree with Angie. I think the all races should have an equal opportunity to go to college, but the way they are doing it is very unfair. If Affirmative action gave equal rights to everyone then I think I would agree with Affirmative action, but that's not the case. I can't understand why they give unintelligent kids who are minorities extra points because they get a chance to get into really good colleges, but guess what, the really smart kids who could be white won't get the chance to go to college who may of studied really hard in high school. Then soon enough half of our workforce who are unintelligent that have the most important jobs will cause chaos because they won't have a single idea what they are doing. My mom works for a bank and she checks the checks online to make sure no checks are frauds or that terrorists are sending money. One of my mom's coworkers allowed THREE fraud/terrorists checks to go by. That coworker only got into college because she a was minority but she is very unintelligent. These are the problems that are not to late to fix. If we get rid of Affirmative action, but make it so that minorities get a chance to go to college not because of their skin color, but because of their intelligence then we could fix America. Same should go for the workforce.

I agree with Ella and Cadence. Affirmative action is needed in the present time. A big thing that it does is help disadvantaged students. With this more people from other countries will have more opportunities here when they wouldn't have them in their native country. This gives them an advantage but a positive advantage so these people can have their chances just like everyone else. Affirmative action really promotes diversity. It allows people to spread their cultures among their schools, jobs and other activities and work places. Green Garage says that, "Normally, opinions of other groups of people are based on stereotypes, but interaction would allow students to learn that members opposite races are people too, more or less just like themselves." With affirmative action, people with different races will all come together and support each other. This will put down segregation and bring different races together. Affirmative action is definitely needed right now!

I disagree with Nabil and Cadence. Affirmative action is definitely NOT needed right now! It helps the disadvantaged students, but it HURTS America. We could be possibly sending uneducated minorities into the these smart colleges, but will they pass, most likely not and in the end the smart kids who could of passed collage and help America by becoming a doctor or another important position didn't get the chance. Affirmative action isn't helping by promoting diversity because by promoting diversity it could be dangerous because we may have half the workforce in 2030 that have important jobs, may have NO CLUE what they are doing and this could possibly affect America severely.

This is more of a response to Vlad, but I'm pretty sure most colleges wouldn't even consider any person that isn't suited or a match for their criteria. I agree that its unfair to deny a white person over a minority solely for their race and because there is a 50/50 chance that they're more suited to be accepted. That doesn't mean the favored one, in this case, the minority, is that unsuited, especially, as again said, if the college is very prestigious and influential as they still have an image to prove, not just show. Overall, it is not unproductive not to that extent. Plus, that is also unfair to the people who are also a different race other than white and deserve getting into that school.

I disagree with Adrian and Anthony. I believe that we don't need affirmative action. It's true that it used to be helpful, almost necessary, to get people of color into college and give them jobs. Now I believe that it isn't helping people of color as much as it is hurting white people. As a white person, I wouldn't want a person of a different race taking a spot that should be mine, just because of their skin. If they beat me out fairly, that's fine, if they have more qualification and will be better for the job I would be all right. But as studies show, and is stated in the article "people who are given a position solely based on the stipulations of this policy are often not qualified". This means that people who may be less qualified for a position could get it over me because I'm white and they're not. That doesn't make sense and is frankly unfair.

I think at this time we need affirmative action, currently it is helping students with disadvantages get an education. With affirmative action minority students are more able to get and advanced education which is good because they may have struggled in the past or been held back just because of their race. The article states "This policy is a way to make sure that diversity is achieved" and I think affirmative action is helping people of different races come together. Having people of different ethnic backgrounds together is preparing them for the real world and is exposing them to what life is really like. Furthermore I think we need affirmative action because it is helping us balance the scale and giving everyone opportunities regardless of their race

I agree with Julia. I feel affirmative action is helping students that are at a disadvantage and that it is helping people live in a more device world where people aren't getting discriminated against for being a minority but are being helped in anyway that they need. the article states, "This policy is a way to make sure that diversity is achieved and maintained in workplaces and schools, thus helping create tolerant communities as it exposes individuals to various ideas and cultures that are different from their own". this shows that affirmative action isn't only good because it insures diversity but it also ensures that tolerance among people of all races is possible and achievable. The article also states,"Without Affirmative Action, some stereotypes may never be broken. For many years, black people were considered less capable than whites, and it took the implementation of the policy to give these people the chance to show they are every bit as capable. This and other stereotypes have started to change and will continue to change with the help of this policy". These stereotypes that have been enforced on the new generations can be broken with affirmative action by instilling real ideas and taking away stereotypes for good. To conclude, I believe that affirmative action is needed.

I agree with Julia. We need affirmative action in this country and since it was very unfair to minorities back in the day, I agree that we need to even out the playing fields. Now some people may say it's not fair and that it doesn't make sense to give extra points to minorities but it does. With this it creates a diverse community in the school. It wouldn't be fair if colleges and universities would be taking only white/Caucasian kids only. Minorities have been held back for hundreds of years and are just trying to get a good education and take a step up in the community. I believe that affirmative action is a step in the right direction to equality.

"Affirmative action is an action created to promote equality among minority groups in the US and to protect them from racist injustice and hate crimes," (greengarage.blog). Affirmative action is something we need today. We would need affirmative action in this world because without it minorities would be treated with incredible disrespect. The affirmative action allows the disadvantaged individuals with advancing. As the article states "Affirmative Action has helped disadvantaged people coming from other parts of the country, where there are not very many opportunities for them, to be able to advance where they otherwise could not,". The quote is basically saying that affirmative action gives the disadvantaged people that came from different parts of the world to have the oppurtunities as other people. Although affirmative action is not being treated as a necessity anymore, it has been a great help to giving the minorities a chance. I agree with Skye when she says that having affirmative action can decrease the amount of racism in our society. That is why affirmative action should remain being used today.

"For many years, black people were considered less capable than whites", (greengarageblog.org). Black people were considered less capable than whites, but when there was a workplace with diversity it showed that black people have the same capability as any other white person. It's fair for everyone because the minorities where always treated bad and Hispanics would be called "immigrants" and other disrespectful names. In addition, minorities would be discriminated these days for jobs, sports etc just because of their looks and who they are. In the article, "Affirmative Action has helped disadvantaged people coming from other parts of the country, where there are not very many opportunities for them, to be able to advance where they otherwise could not," (greengarage.blog). i agree with Liangy and skye that affirmative action should still be allowed. yeah, some people may think that we dont need it anymore and its already been made up for the discrimination that was caused. The reason why i think it should still be allowed is because its fair for everyone because if an african american or hispanic did not have extra points and a college had to pick between the african american or the white person most colleges would pick the white person because even if we move passed slavery there is still racism in this world. Hispanics arent being treated fair because they think just because they are immagrants they are violent and do bad things and thats not right thats why they need to extra points so they have a better chance to get into a college or job like it says in the article. Just because an african american comes into an all white college and he is dressed all baggy they start judging him and dont pick him just by his looks so the extra pints help him get into a college he deserves to get. in the article it says "Affirmative Action has helped disadvantaged people coming from other parts of the country, where there are not very many opportunities for them, to be able to advance where they otherwise could not. Simply put, the policy gives everyone an equal playing field" (greengarageblog). its basically saying that people from other conuntries get descriminated so the extra points help them get a chance to show they can do it just as whites.

I think that affirmative action should be kept. As stated in pro reason 3, " It offers a boost to disadvantaged students."( Green Garage ) Not everyone can afford to go to college, or have a quick access to money for college, so affirmative action helps minorities get a good education. Another reason is affirmative action helps expose minorities to more available options colleges offer, rather than not going to college at all, "It promotes more work and study." ( Green Garage ) A minority might choose something they might not have considered if they didn't get accepted into college. Everyone should deserve a chance at success.

With all due respect, I strongly disagree with Vlad. Affirmitive Action, is granting kids a chance of getting an education and positively changing the face of America. It grants those who are minorities extra points, in order to give an advantage to those who are minorities that have continued to struggle according to statistics. Think of how many times people have been held back because if their race, they've probably earned a bad reputation because of it. Now with Affirmitive Action, it creates an opportunity for a diverse and multi-cultural learning enviroment for all who want an education. According to that blog "It breaks stereotypes regarding color", which would be true. Now that everybody has a chance to pursue an education, no race can feel superior to another. Sorry white people, but affirmitive action is just gonna be here for a while until we somehow find that "balance", I don't have a grudge or nothing towards yall. -WiseWordsofKendrick

I agree with Ella and Nabil, affirmative action is needed today because it really does help disadvantaged students. It also helps to spread diversity throughout schools and communities which is needed now more then ever. The reason for this is because every school tries to spread diversity, and make people feel comfortable with who they are, where as though that wouldn't happen in their native country. As stated in the article, "Affirmative action is an action created to promote equality among minority groups in the US and to protect them from racist injustice and hate crimes." I believe affirmative action is important and a step in a positive direction. I believe if a school has a well-rounded amount of races and has different people from different cultures and backgrounds this could only help students get a more realistic expectation of what the real world is going to be like. I believe that will help people better understand each other and respect and celebrate each other's differences. But one downside I see from my perspective as a person of color is I would object to the fact that a school would only want me to be a part of their community just because I'd bring more diversity to their college. And I'd feel bad for opportunities I'd be taking away from someone that might have better scores than me and can't get in because they cannot bring diversity into the college.

i agree and disagree with Alejandra Granados. iwe do need it in some ways but we also don't. It is good because it helps some people but its bad because it can be unfair because if you do great in school and apply for a college and some other person that does not even show up to class (i'm not saying that different skin tones people do this i am just giving a example of it) and they get in the school and you don't. So it is unfair and fair. Racism is still bad but it is not as bad as it was.

I believe that there should be Affirmative Action. I believe this because it promotes work and learning to people that might be colored and shows that they have a chance to get a good job and education for life. I think that if we did not have affirmative action there might be more racism because not as much colored citizens would be able to join a collage and get a good job.

I feel affirmative action should be in place but for a limited time. Sure we didn't cause any of the historical wrong doing but being so educated and open minded now i feel we should be able to take responsibility for the things that were done. Using affirmative action as a way of apology or way to show that equality is a real thing and that we all want to strive for it.

I agree and disagree with Ruben. I agree in a since that we need Affirmative Action to unite our nation as a whole. Meaning that we need everyone to be equal and in a minorities mind and position we are not there yet. We are in a state that whites are still above most people and minorities are still below us. I disagree with Ruben because There are parts of Affirmative Action that should be taken away and is serving as a reverse discrimination. One example of this would be giving minorities extra points. I am trying my best to not sound racist but I believe that all children applying for a high school or college should have an equal chance to get in. I believe there should be a way that admissions workers at a school should not except a white or a minority because they need more of them. In the article in Cons number 1 it says right away, "Primarily, Affirmative Action was designed to end unfair treatment and discrimination of anyone based on color, but it in effect, it has done the opposite"(Green Garage). This states that although Affirmative Action was supposed to make everyone equal again doesn't mean you take away opportunities away from people that deserve it whether your white, Hispanic, Asian, Jewish, African American, and other religions and religious beliefs.

I agree with Casey. As it stated in the article, "This policy is a way to make sure that diversity is achieved and maintained in workplaces and schools, thus helping create tolerant communities as it exposes individuals to various ideas and cultures that are different from their own." (Blog website) I feel as if we got rid of affirmative, then everyone would go against the other race. Everyone is equal no matter ow smart they are and I think that's what some people need to remember. No-A-days, everyone is judging everyone by how they look. Just because someone is black, that doesn't mean the are stupid or rude. Just because someone is Asian, that doesn't mean they are really smart. It is just known that MOST Asians are very smart not all.

I disagree with Vlad. I believe that Affirmative actions allows for people of all races to be allowed to learn together. Most colleges would pick white people compared to minorities. They allow minorities to have a better chance than they had before. "This policy was designed as a means of helping to compensate for the fact that because of many years of oppression, some races are being 'held back in the race”. It was put in to help people get a better chance to get an education. It also pushes people to work hard for their education.

I disagree with you Gohar. Affirmative action does push people to work harder, but more so it would have to be whites pushing harder than minorities because since minorities already have an advantage to getting to colleges they don't have to push as hard as whites. It does allow for all races to work together, but then again if that minority was only picked because of skin color there is good chance they could be unintelligent. Honestly America should just forget about the past and move on for equality. Remembering what the whites did to the blacks will give blacks more power than whites because of the oppression whites have done to the blacks in the past.

In my opinion there should be affirmative action nobody in this country or any other country should be worrying about what race we are that is why we should all be treated equally not only that but we are not all perfect so yes we should have affirmative action even if many people don't agree with it. Lastly, I agree with jaelin all races should have the right to equality.

I’m conflicted on this one. In my opinion, as a minority, I like the advantage because it’s a great advantage and I’d take it. However, in the bigger scheme of things, I think this advantage serves as a double-standard and although effective to its original intention, it’s quite hypocritical as we’re basically doing the same things that happened decades ago, but in reverse. Schools should accept students on their skill not color whether they’re white, black, brown, and etc. This is further describes in an article on the website, Green Garage, in this quote: “There is no association between these details and discipline, intelligence, ambition, character and other essentials, rendering such information useless” (Green Garage). Moreover, if its discriminatory, than its subject to law, even if it’s private because that college, university, etc. is subjected to civic law and vulnerable to being sued. Now, getting into the details, when I mean the advantage, I mean colleges favoring minorities. This is related to Affirmative Action as it has increased representation among minorities in schools and thus, the workplace. Nonetheless, there are other ways to increased representation instead of just favoring specific races. As such, Affirmative Action was built to create equality and equal opportunity among these races. This can be shown in its original policy. According to the website, Infoplease, Affirmative Action finally began as policy to be strictly followed in September 24, 1965 after the issuing of Executive Order 12246 (Infoplease). “Issued by President Johnson, the executive order requires government contractors to ‘take affirmative action’ toward prospective minority employees in all aspects of hiring and employment. Contractors must take specific measures to ensure equality in hiring and must document these efforts. On Oct. 13, 1967, the order was amended to cover discrimination on the basis of gender” (Infoplease). Furthermore, Affirmative Action support Title VII, that was implemented three years earlier, where schools and the workplace can’t discriminate a person on their race or skin color. With that knowledge in mind, shouldn’t we implement actual programs to help those if they don’t have it? Heck, shouldn’t we do this to help any disadvantaged person like one living in poverty or one from other discriminated groups so they would have the chance or at least potential to succeed in general? Likewise, there should be different regulations, like stricter reports in those institutions to report on racism and other forms of discrimination. When found, the school is bombarded with the consequences. When you think about it, repealing Affirmative Action or its policy won’t do crap. Title VII, which was is very similar to Affirmative Action, would just takes it place when it comes to guarding against racism. Repeal that and you’re basically giving free passes to more severe forms of racism. Some may say Title VII by itself may be less effective because schools and businesses may find loopholes like in the past. I disagree as the same action would be taken for Title VII like Title XI, meaning equal representation and opportunity for a group like race or sex. Basically, you’re stuck with the same deal unless you work with what you can get. So to sum it up, I want to Affirmative Action to stay as its original idea and beliefs aren’t wrong and support and emphasise these very good intentions. Nevertheless, I’m against how they’re carried out as Affirmative Actions should increase representation by giving others an equal opportunity to learn, get a good education, and to be hired while guarding against racism, not straight up favoring those who are more subjected to be discriminated.

Abigail Fisher did not get into the college because the other people that were getting accepted into UT were other minorities because just like we talked about in class if there was a white kid and another kid that had a different minority and both those kids had the same grades they would pick the kid with the different minority because of how the slaves years ago were not able to get educated

I believe that affirmative action should be used today because it gives people an equal chance and ability to have an equal chance to get a job. Like it said in the article "Affirmative action is an action created to promote equality among minority groups in the US and to protect them from racist injustice and hate crimes," (greengarage.blog). this states that its a law that states that affirmitive action gives and equal chance no matter what race they are.

I agree with Casey we should still have affirmative action in this country. Affirmative action allows all of the races to mix with each other in school. Just because white people get mad that they don't get extra points when applying for college is dumb. People other than white have been made fun of for so many centuries so I feel like they deserve a chance to get into a college they want. .

I disagree with Ashley. It's not dumb for whites to get mad that they don't get extra points, it's a serious issue. If whites can't get into colleges and the minorities are the majority in the workforce then where is the equality in this. People say that blacks should get an advantage because they have been tortured by whites for so many years, but I don't think that should be the case. I know slavery was bad in America, but blacks shouldn't get an advantage over whites. What happened to all men should be born free and equal?

I think that Affirmative Action should stay in place. If you look at the data (shown in Mr.Bochners class) Hispanics and African Americans live in poverty. Getting extra points for background could make a big difference in the stats. As stated in the article, "Students who started at a disadvantage need a boost, and this policy has made it happen. Generally speaking, these involved mostly minority students. Usually coming from lower-income families, they would have lesser opportunities to attend private schools, unlike white students. However, we should take note that sincere and hard-working minority students are every bit as capable as white students, but because of the disadvantages they experience, they were not having the same paper qualifications". This basically means that minorities are known to be at a disadvantage, so this policy gives them an extra boost. Most white people have enough money to send their children to private school and get extra help if needed. On the other hand, minorities have to work hard to get the grades they want .Not saying tutors is "not trying", but minorities have to either stay after school, which that option isn't always open (seeing as they live in poverty and may have a job to help their parents), or just try and figure it out themselves. All in all I believe that Affirmative Action should stay in place.

I believe affirmitive action is still required and needed for today's society. Yes, I do agree it's a disadvantage for smart white kids who want to get into good colleges, but it's still unfair to minorities because only 15% of them are accepted. The remaining 85% goes to white kids, which presents a perfect example of inequality. Affirmitive action promotes minorities, which exposes diversity to many white kids who are used to everyone in there community being exactly the same. In reality, not many oppurtunities are given to minorities. It will always be white people, getting picked over minorites. That's just a general fact everyone knows. In conclusion, I do think affirmitive action is needed.

I agree with Nabil. I think that Affirmative Action is necessary. Minorities have been put down for much of this country's history, which sets some of them way back, giving them a disadvantage that they are born with. The website stated that it gives a boost to these minorities, saying, "Usually coming from lower-income families, [minorities] would have lesser opportunities to attend private schools, unlike white students." The point they are trying to make is that since minorities already have a huge disadvantage from their ancestors' and even parents' opportunities, Affirmative Action helps balance this disadvantage out, helping minorities who might not have had the same opportunities as white people. Though the article says that Affirmative Action compensates for the wrong-doings of white ancestors to the ancestors of minorities, I do not think that this is why it is needed. Today's population doesn't need to pay for the wrongs of our ancestors. What Affirmative Action does do is that it allows for minorities to get better education and jobs, so that over time, these minorities can push themselves out of poverty, since some minorities are in the lower class. Affirmative Action helps minorities get more opportunities, and also brings more diversity to work places and forms of education.

I disagree with Aislinn. Affrimitive action is NOT needed. I understand that minorities in the past haven't had fair opportunities in the past, but that shouldn't hurt us whites. What happened to equality to everyone? It helps minorities get jobs and into colleges but possibly only because of their skin color. That's not right it should be based on the person's background and their test scores. I have listed tons of examples of problems that this causing and ways to fix them. My dad owns a pizza place and one time a white worker who applied to college(not sure where) but he got denied. Later he found out that a bunch of minorities got into the college but he couldn't get in. He had a great opportunity ruined. Is this what you what people...

Okay Vlad, I see where you're coming from and I respect your pride and enthusiasm. However, I have to disagree. First of all, affirmative action has nothing to do with getting a job, Affirmative Action is only for college applications. Second of all, just because many minorities were accepted to the college doesn't mean that's the reason your father's employee wasn't accepted. You know nothing about his education. Perhaps he just didn't meet the requirements or didn't do well on the test. It is not okay, however, for you or anyone to assume it is a minority's fault he didn't get accepted, or that the fact that minorities are finally getting some form of an advantage is the reason he was rejected. Either way, your father's white employee will always have an advantage almost anywhere over minorities just because he's white. You can't assume he didn't get into the college just because many minorities were accepted.
Gigi

I fully agree with Aislinn. Those who are saying affirmative action isn't needed are saying "it's unfair because a minority could get into a college over them just because of they're a minority." This however is not unfair at all. Without affirmative action, there's a slim to none chance many minorities who deserve an education wouldn't get into a college because a white student would be chosen over them just because they're white. That is the real world. And, either way, the amount of points given with affirmative action is actually an extremely small amount. So if you feel like it's not fair because you didn't get in and they did over a matter of 4 or 5 points, then you really don't deserve it much more than they do. That's one thing I think some people are not seeing.

I disagree with Sofia Morel. I think we don't need affirmative action anymore. Now there is no way to end racism but there is a way to make it more diverse without giving others advantages. This act or system can have a reverse effect which can make whites feel they are being discriminated. Affirmative action was used when racism or racists were more common although it is still common I don't think it is as bad. Why should minority's get extra points for being who they are? This extra point system can make a huge difference. Say a white male or female had a really good application to try and get into a college but then a Asian comes in with one that is equally as good but just not as good but because he is Asian he gets extra points that boost him ahead of this white male or female. This would mean that the Asian gets into the college or the white male. This also goes with jobs that someone could have a better Resume but because the owner needs to hire a number of minority's the white male or female doesn't get chosen. This system can make a huge difference to someone and their lives. You should have to work to get where you are and I'm not saying minority's immigrating here don't work to get here I'm saying that people should be treated as equal. we should get an equal chance at life and an education. We don't deserve our jobs and life being taken away because our ancestors have done bad. This is present America not past we need to look at what is happening now not then. What our ancestors have done to treat minority's the way they used to be treated has nothing to do with how we treat them now. We are a new generation and we don't need a system or act to make a difference in diversity. We just need each other. We need to unite as nations and make a difference in the world. For the sake of humans and their rights.

In my opinion I think we still do need affirmative action because just because we were born differently doesn't mean that we are different. Racism is a big factor in affirmative action racism happens a lot back then and it still happens a lot today. Affirmative action can help jobs and colleges because if they accept all white people then minorities would look at the school and not want to go there because there is no diversity in the environment and it wouldn't feel welcoming. This might lead to more protests about diversity in some schools and just because of skin color they are looked at the same. Everybody has dreams and just because of their skin color doesn't mean they don't get a chance. If there is a minority and they have dreams to become something they shouldn't be stopped just because of their skin color. Everyone is the same no matter what who we are and what color of skin we have.

I believe we still need affirmative action because it gives school s big chance to create a diverse community in colleges and universities. A major reason I feel we still need this is because if we would get rid of it and bring it forward to the public, many African american, Hispanic and many other minority communities would feel even more suppressed to the Caucasians. Eventually it would lead to even more civil unrest tan we already have and our bonds between minorities would keep decreasing

I agree with Cadence that we should have affirmative action to increase diversity in schools and businesses. It can be more difficult for a minority to get as good of an education as someone else in some cases, but that doesn't mean they should not have the opportunity to get in a good college or get a job. It is unfortunate that this country is so focused on what your race is, but at least with affirmative action, there is less discrimination, and there will be more equal amounts of each race in workplaces.
