I honestly think people take swearing as a big thing. I understand if your swearing in public it just makes the way you represent your self bad , but if its diffirent and you doing it to blow of steam , and help you take your anger out without being physical i see its perfectly fine. Some people are to extra when they swear and they should realize when there being extra with swearing it just dosent make you look like a smart person . People should be able to swear but not take swearing for granted.

I agree with Haley, swearing isn't a huge deal, they are simply words. Yes, swearing like crazy in public isn't classy but if people choose to do that then it is their decision, same thing in school it should't be much different although it won't affect many people if they do change the rules or not. People make it sound like swearing is whats going to mess your life up, but when really if you know how to watch your mouth to a certain point then why would it matter?

I agree with Skye, It is your choice if you want to swear or not. If You occasionally swear that is fine some people still might not find tat classy but that is there opinion if if there is no point in swearing and you do it anyways that isn't classy even if that is your opinion or not. Every sentence you say shouldn't have a swear in that is just plain wrong.

To be honest I think swearing is over used. I have met some people in my life who swore in every single sentence. That isn't necessary. I also think that kids that are 17 or younger shouldn't swear. There is no reason for them to be swearing a young age. Yet again no one needs to be swearing. Yes, say you did stub your toe really hard, swear words don't need to be used. You can use a more friendly word like OUCH! Anyways, swear words don't need to be used in any cases. You can express how you feel with kinder, more humane words.

In my family they know not to repeat and swear because they've been tought not to. Therefore, i think t can used as a educational lesson, and teach the kid from right and wrong.

Personly, I think swearing should be legal anywhere, for mulitple reasons. Such as, 1) Freedom of speech. Some people may not like that kind of language, but in that sense you want to take someones right just because you don't like something. 2) Its not that serious. Yes, i do think that you should be aware of what you're saying and how you're saying things, that being said, if you can understand what you saying and how it will effect you, Then go aheawho didn't get the job. Therefore, others shouldn't have a say on something they have nothing to do with. d. For example, if you swear in a interview and don't get the job, that's your fault and you have to deal with your consequence. I don't see how that has anythig to do with anybody, but the person who didn't get the job. Therefore, why sould someone get a say on something tha doesn't involve them. 3) There just words. I don't think words should be taken so seriously. I think swearing is something people see as bad. but me, I think swears are just like any other words, and just like any other words you sould know where, when, and how to use them. 4) Swearing can be good for you. Swearing can help you express your self. Sometimes certain words can't express how your feeling. For example, when you say "hate" instead of "strongly dislike" Those two things mean the same thing, but one just packs more of a punch. For many reasons, swearing should be legal because there is nothing wrong with it besides some people dont like it. In that case, you don't have to swear.

I think swearing in public is constitutional. Why? Freedom of speech. The very first amendment says that you have the freedom to swear if you want to. If you swear in public, who is it going to effect? Only the person you say it to. Some people say it is a "Disturbance of peace" but in busy cities, there really wasn't any peace in the first place. I understand why you would want to complain if someone yelled a swear in the middle of the night, but that is it.

Yeah sure it can be weird to hear but most people who swear don't even know what the definition of the word even means. It's not the word because if the f*** word meant grass and grass meant the f*** word then grass would be a bad word. Also swear words or "bad words" is not saw for what it actually means. Oops sorry...I agree with Kassidy that swearing shouldn't be illegal. I say this because most people are pretty mature when it comes to swearing especially around kids and they know how to handle it without spitting it out. Kids really shouldn't be exposed to swearing but because of amendment 1(freedom of speech) we still have the right to swear in private and in public as said in the video. When other people say that they don't want that language in their family, then they don't have to use it. People are not forced into using this language even with peer pressure because people can say "no". However, I think it is good to keep it legal because many others like to use swear words and if we keep it legal then those others can use them and the people who don't want to don't have to. Nobody is forced into using this language because of freedom of speech and nobody shouldn't have to be forced to not use that language because of freedom of speech. Therefore, I think that we should keep swearing legal because it gives a choice for people to either not use it or use it.

I disagree with Kassidy. I don't think swearing should be illegal either, but it shouldn't matter if you're an adult or not. Swears are just words. You can say a lot of hurtful things without swearing even once, and still make someone feel bad, so you might as well swear if you feel like it. If you're just hanging out with friends you should be able to swear. If you'r in a public place, swearing might make some people uncomfortable, but you have freedom of speech. Kassidy said that adults know when not to swear, but I think that's actually the complete opposite- I hear adults swear all of the time, and it's not a big deal. Swearing isn't really professional or classy, so if you went to court and swore at the judge, I don't think you'd have a great chance of winning. While a swear is just a word, it is used to emphasize what you're saying, or to express an emotion. It's not always negative. Maybe swearing should be discouraged in very professional places, but not illegal. Like it was said in the video, you should be protected by your freedom of speech.

It may not be classy and it may be a bad habit but it is just an adult word people use and even some people don't like it you cannot change that fact. It is just a word people use. And what you said about the Judge yes he or she may be taken back but it is people right and it may not be right but i think older adults would have the respect of not to say it to older people because it is a level of maturity and respect. Also yes adults do swear no doubt about that but they have the right to even in public cause you are saying the swear in general not to somebody if that was the case that would be a little different. But if you are saying this in public it should not matter and nobody should take offence to it because you are saying it in general.

I feel the same way Sophia does towards swearing, and that is that it should only be discouraged in public places but should not be illegal. Swears are just words that happen to be seen by society as harmful, but the truth is that there are many other words that aren't swears that could hurt someone much more. Yes, swearing in public is completely unprofessional, but it should not be illegal to swear in public. I agree completely with Sophia. we have the right as Americans to say whatever we want, whenever, and to who ever. There is places where it is considered rude to say swears and we should respect that but making swearing illegal is completely absurd. Like the video said "Don't the police have better things to do?". The police have other bigger, more important thing to worry about than the foul language that so many Americans use. We use swears to add emotion to our words and add feelings. Why should we take that away from the citizens. Say we do make swearing illegal, what would that accomplish? People would still swear it's part of their vocabulary. Though swearing is wrong to do in certain places times, we should still be able to have the ability.

Right now I feel like the teachers can't hear(which is werid because they can hear us when we talk too much), because I hear swearing SO MUCH in Park View, it isn't even funny. However, if someone is swearing too loudly or too much in a public area, I feel that they could be charged for disturbing the peace, or if it's used at someone, like a slur, it could be charged as harassment. In your own house or with your friends in a private area, it should be up to household rule. If your parents are ok with you swearing, than you can... in your house. If your parents are strongly against swearing, then no, don't swear. Bottom line is that swearing itself is not a crime, but it can be seen as a different one and is just very rude.

I think swearing should not be illegal because people in America have the right to have freedom of speech. Yes, most "swearing" words are inappropriate, and referred to as "foul language", but overall they're just words. Some words are hurtful and disturbing to others, but someone shouldn't be charged for speaking there mind. If an inappropriate word is the first thing that pops into your mind to describe something, say it! I do agree with how recent, and popular the language has come to kids, but wouldn't you rather them hear it now and from you than from a friend, or stranger the parents personally don't know. Swearing isn't best way of speaking, but sometimes certain words have to be said, and heard by specific people. Swearing shouldn't affect you, and the way you act, it's you who sets your maturity level to your reaction. Will you use the words, or choose not to? The way you speak, is you're choice not others. Overall, swearing shouldn't be illegal because your free way of speaking is constitutional.

I agree with Sofia. Swearing should not be illegal in the United States of America. Swearing is a way of expressing how one feels about something. Without expressing ourselves, us people as a society wouldn't even be as close to what it is now. That could mean good or bad in some ways. Swearing isn't the problem itself, it is the person using them and how they are using them that is the problem. Swearing can be foul at times, but that is just because people don't know their manners. Swearing should be used moderately, at the appropriate times, because no one likes to hear a loudmouth. People just making swearing out of proportion, because in this day and age we don't know what to expect. In conclusion swearing should not be illegal because of the rights given to citizens because of the Constitution.

Like Sophia said it shouldn't matter if you are an adult or kid because both of us have this right and should be allowed to swear. Like judge Andrew said about if bannin swearing was legal, "No, it is not legal. You can use foul language in public and you can use it in private because it is protected by the first amendment." In the video the news reporter said "The fine for swearing is $20 in Massachusetts," and that is an unreasonable payment. Swearing should not at all be paid for, it should be punished and have limitations. By limitations I mean swearing should not be allowed in area with children because if you do they grow and learn to say "Oh Sh......aving Cream!" Sadly society has been corrupted and every single thing we listen has to "female dog, the word that rhymes with puck, and body parts" and it all has be listened by the younger generation. In the video it states, "The very famous basketball coach used the "f word" towards a reporter who asked him a question that he didn't want to answer. The charges against the coach were dismissed when the court rules as a matter of law that that word is an intensifier." I agree completely with this quote and how they chose to charge the coach. I agree with Nabil, that swearing shouldn't be made illegal. Where the interviewer on the video said that this topic was a slippery slope, he was right though. I think that it is the peoples' right to swear, since it is the freedom of speech, as the judge, Andrew Napolitano, said. However, though it shouldn't be illegal, there is certain limitations as to where someone should swear. Though, in my opinion, swears aren't appropriate in certain situations, this doesn't mean that the government should be enforcing a no-swearing policy. Judge Napolitano said that swears are strictly "intensifiers," and that they are used to amplify the meanings of things. This may not be true in all cases, but I just don't think that swearing should be made illegal. I think it is up to your sense of right and wrong, and your morals, to determine whether you swear, but a law shouldn't enforce that.

I get what your saying Mr. Bochner but if the parent(s) want to swear, then they can. They are the adults and can make their own decisions. Maybe they are ok with their kid swearing. Sometimes kids only listen when their parent(s) swear and yell at them.

In my opinion swearing is not a good thing to do. However people have their right to swear. It all comes down to how you are raised, if your parents do not swear in front of you you probably won't swear but if they do its a different story. I believe that swearing in public is just wrong because once you swear people think differently about you. It can change a lot like if you have a job interview and you swear your probably not going to get the job. However people don't like that because it is a right(Freedom Of Speech). In the video Judge Napolitano says, "You can use foul language because it is protected by the First Amendment"(Fox News). Like I said it all depends how you feel and how you are raised. You do have the right but it is wrong.

I agree with Ruben because I also think that people have their right to swear and as he said in the video, "In a word no it is not legal. You have freedom of speech but is it really acceptable if you're in front of some kids and you start screaming swears, no.

I agree with Ruben because it does matter on how you are raised. If your parents swear a lot in public you will think it is ok. Swearing will just reflect on how you are as a person and if people like you for that or not. Swearing could affect someone if you say it towards them in a certain way but, swearing just mostly affects you as a person and, swearing also makes you look like you are just cool if you swear in front of people for no reason.

I think that swearing in public is unconstitutional. Yes, there is freedom of speech, but swearing is one of those things that is just not right, despite the way some people think of it. Swearing is rude and it gives off the impression that you're not well educated. Imagine letting your own child swear in public. People might think that your'e an irresponsible parent, and there could be the possibility of having your child taken away. Swearing is sometimes used as a way for someone to express them self, but there are better alternatives like writing out your feelings or doing an activity like a sport to take your mind off things. Swearing should be used in moderation if someone feels the need to, but it is the persons choice of swearing or not.

I agree with Madison. People should be allowed to swear in public without getting fined for it. They are protected by the first amendment so they have the right to swear if they want to. I feel like if the parents swear at home the kids will feel like they'll need to do that in public or even at they're elders. But in all honesty you shouldn't just make swearing illegal just because you don't like it. If you don't like swearing then don't do it.

very true! It shouldn't be illegal just because people don't like it. That's just their opinions and sometimes, people opinions don't matter.

i think swearing should be allowed in public because people have freedom of speech. Even though it might not be right they still can say what they want to say.

I think swearing is constitutional. Although I'm not big on it, people can say whatever they want because of freedom of speech. I do think that they(people) should be aware of there surroundings (so they don't start dropping the f bomb in front of little kids). Kids in 4 grade are already swearing all the time, and where do you think they got those words from? Adults. That's right, adults, the ones that we kids look up to are making a bad influence on children. And yes although everyone (including those 4th graders) gets their fair share of rights, BUT it's still not right having a kid yelling in the store or someplace dropping all kinds of swears. I've seen kids my age in stores, swearing in front of their parents and their parents do Nothing about it, and that's not really right. Overall I think swearing is constitutional but only in certain situations.

I think that its up to your parent if you can swear but if there not with them they can so I don't know. I just don't think swearing should be illegal because that would be dome.

I agree with Ashley, I think there should not be any major consequences for swearing in public. It is not necessarily always right to swear in public but it is constitutional, as part of our freedom of speech we are allowed to say what we want say and that includes swearing. As Napolitano says in the video swear words are intensifiers and just part of our language. We use swears to express our selves and our emotions, I think there is noting wrong with that.

Swearing is unconstitutional and people can say whatever they want anyway they have freedom of speech to protect them. I am not a fan of people swearing and I don't agree with it at all if an adult swears I would say they have the right to do it for their personal reasons but when a child swears that is a different story. I agree with Kassidy swearing is bad but it cannot be banned since we have freedom of speech and even if we try that would just make things worse. Maybe we should just try to swear less and set the right examples to those who need it.

"That word is an intensifier" says a reporter speaking on the F word being used towards a reporter. I personally agree half way down the line. I agree with the reporter and Autumn, but i also agree with Mr. Bochner. I feel that people always have the right to curse, unless the establishment that they are in says other wise, but i also feel like people should have a filter depending on their surroundings.

My opinion on swearing in public is that you can swear, but choose not to, not unless the situation calls for it. What I mean by situation, I mean when you’re upset, slip up or put emphasis on something as you’re talking. However, even with an excuse like that, it may not be given a pass. Likewise, I think swearing in public is constitutional. In the video, Judge Andrew Napolitano, a FOX News Judicial Analyst, says this in response to: “In a word no, it is not legal. You can use foul language in public and you can use it in private because it’s protected by the First Amendment because the Supreme Court said so-” (Youtube). As shown here, swearing is basically a form of expression and, furthermore, free speech. Consequently, it’s protected by the First Amendment, the basis of what country is based on and prides in. Making swearing illegal is therefore, unconstitutional, violating our rights for free speech. Additionally, it is approved by the Supreme Court, the highest form of federal court and having the highest positions in one of America’s three government branches. Therefore, in order to make swearing illegal, then a new amendment might be passed, possibly going against free speech in general or the First Amendment as a whole. Such a change for a small problem can be greatly abused as shown in other countries and lead to some unpleasant scenarios. In a similar fashion, others may argue that swearing may lead to tense conflicts like disrespecting the police or authority, riots and fight, verbal abuse, etc. My response to all of that is that it’s true, but there are consequences, charges, fines, etc. for those conflicts to prevent them. It’s also good to note that these people choose to commit these actions like fighting or committing verbal abuse, which have factors that causes it or results from it besides swearing most of the time. Meanwhile, disrespecting the police is rude, but when you think about it, the police can still fine you, just not directly linked to you swearing and being disrespectful. Even with that off the table, they can be more bias in fining you or finding ways to fine you out of spite. With that said, it’s pretty redundant to put so much work to stop something so petty. Lastly, you should keep in mind swearing isn’t used for those purposes all the time with ways listed in the beginning of this paragraph.

I don't think swearing should be illegal. And plus, Joe Pesci is one of the greatest actors. He's known for swearing so much in his gangster movies, he shouldn't get fined. Its the persons fault for watching his movies if they don't like the amount of profanity. Like c'mon, its Joe Pesci, what do you expect? That's how all Italian people show their love... swearing. Anyway, Napolitano says "A very famous basketball coach who used the f word toward a reporter who asked him a question he didn't want to answer. But charges against the coach were dismissed." He even stated how it's part of our language, its an intensifier. When Mr. Bochner said, if there was a mother in a line at a store and they hit and swear at their child, what do you do? Some people may not pay attention because its N O N E of their business. And others may just say something. It should not be illegal, it's just part of our language. Most people are comfortable when they swear. As long as you use it in the right way, it should be fine. But if its somewhere important like a job interview, you shouldn't swear then because you have to impress someone to get the job. If its at home, that's a different story because it's your home. Also freedom of speech!!! Swearing may not be classy in some places but it shouldn't matter because of the first amendment.

In my opinion I think that swearing is within our constitutional rights and should be legal. I have reasons for this remark. The first one being that these words like the F word are not always used as a way to insult someone. For example, in many sports, coaches will use swearing as a way to add more intensity to a statement and it can be used to really be used to make a point. So the people who see it as unconstitutional, would you want to fine someone for every time they said a swear. My second point has to do with the police enforcing swearing on the streets and in public. Is this what we want our law enforcement spending their time on when there are much more important things to do. My final point is that this could take away from your freedom of speech. In the end, swearing is just words that give different meaning to different people, it is really based on your or a communities opinions

I agree with Owen - I think that swearing is constitutional and should be legal. Even if it were against the law, there is really no way to enforce it. People are used to swearing and a law most likely won't stop them. I also think that swearing is viewed differently by everyone. Some people swear in every sentence and think nothing of it, while some never ever swear and think it's terrible. It all depends on what you want to do in your personal life. For example, if you were at a job interview, you would be allowed to swear but by doing it, you would be jeopardizing your chance of getting the job. Also, people should be allowed to swear because of freedom of speech. It is everyone's individual choice whether they swear or not but they should understand that their word choice can affect others' views on them.

I agree with Owen and Mina cause the both say that swearing is constitutional and we are allowed to say it at any time we wan't. It is our first amendment and we are guarded by it and so therefore their shouldn't be a law that prohibits the harsh word usage. So i think that we should not be fined for using tense words but we should just use them less cause that is how children learn and then they start to say it. Anyways it should still be allowed to be used whenever and wherever.

I agree with Amauri because it is our rights button can change a children's perspective on swearing. Also, I think that there is some sort of limit between swearing where you have to respect people and not go around swearing all the time. I also think that swearing can change you as a person and how other people see you.

I agree with Owen that there are many different ways that swearing is used. Swears are being used to intensify a statement or sometimes it just slips out because you got hurt. I feel that there are understandable moments when the word just slips. Although i dont think kids should be throwing out F bombs because its not respectful or classy we do have the freedom to do so. I think parents certainly should enforce certain rules on swearing like not in public or towards elders. I would also not want my future kids swearing at such a young age but if other people dont mind it its up to them and there community

Address the parent and tell them that is not ok. It is hard to charge someone with a fine because it is the right of freedom of speech. The judge mentioned a guy that was charged because of swearing, all his charges were dropped because it is freedom of speech. Also, the judge stated,"We are Americans it is apart of our language". In addition, if you play a sport or coach a sport you might get so angry or really stressed to the point were you have to swear to let all of it out of you. Swearing can be used to calm us down and express feelings. So I think swearing should be right but there should be an age limit
